City Railway Tunnel Karlsruhe

Constructio Method: single faced walls, cut and cover method - trial concrete compaction

Company: BeMo Tunnelling GmbH

Year: 2013 / 2014

A large concrete test block was constructed for the urban railroad in Karlsruhe in order to test the depth compaction of MOOSER formwork vibrators. The trial block had the dimension length 5m x width 5m and a wall thickness of 1m.

The pneumatic formwork vibrators were mounted on the formwork from one side only. The concrete was compacted exclusively with these external vibrators - internal vibrators were not used additionally.

On the Peri formwork above, precast elements were mounted during concrete compaction in order to simulate the connection to the existing cover as well. For the trial block, both girder formwork on a GT24 timber girder base and Peri Trio wall panels were used to enable a decision to be made on the preferred formwork type for the later concreting sections on site.

The result of the trial block was impressive. Both sides of the wall, front and back, look identical and the drill cores showed very good depth compaction. As a result of the excellent surfaces of the trial block, the wall sets at Durlacher Tor, including a eye wall, were subsequently compacted with MOOSER formwork vibrators.
